Family Values

Values are beliefs and attitudes that affect the way we think and act. They form part of our character. They help us decide on the way to look at things, like what is right or wrong, good or bad. They also affect the way we relate with other people around us.

Many of these values may change over time, and people may have different ideas on what certain values mean. Still, there are some values that most people will agree, and accept as important ones that make family life so wonderful.

However, families all over the world are exposed to other ideas and beliefs that can weaken or threaten family life. This is why it is necessary to encourage and promote values that strengthen family ties.

Five Key Family Values

  • Love, Care and Concern
  • Mutual Respect
  • Filial Responsibility
  • Commitment
  • Communication
Love, Care and Concern
Family love gives us comfort and security. Family members cherish one another and show mutual love, affection and support. Care and concern for one another encourage family members to give their best to each other and lend a helping hand when needed.
Mutual Respect
Mutual respect is shown when we are considerate towards others, even though we may not have the same ideas or opinions. It means knowing, accepting and tolerating these differences. It is mutal respect that allows us to adopt a give-and-take attitude and forgive others.
A person who feels respected by family members learns to respect others. We need to preserve racial and religious harmony. To this end, the family plays and important part in cultivating cultural, racial and religious harmony.
Filial Responsibilty
Filial responsibility means honouring and supporting one's parents and grandparents, and providing for them in their old age. It is more than a duty or a chore; it is a natural expression of the close bonds among family members.
Commitment
Commitment is the willingness among family members to support one another through life's ups and downs. It is a commitment that keeps the family together. Sometimes, this involves making sacrifices. A family is a team. All members must fulfil their duties and obligations to lay a firm foundation for security and happiness.

Communication
Effective communication is needed for family members to understand each other's feelings, ideas and views. This builds trust, as well as close relationships. Family bonds are strengthened through open and truthful communications.
